The struggles that independent painters go through for success and acceptance

The struggle is real

‘Painting’, is art form that brings life to a plain white canvas. Though painting is appreciated by a lot of people it is still considered a hobby and not something that the breadwinner of the family can choose to do. The result of this widespread belief among the larger population of India has made it a less pursued path and thereby making it difficult for independent artists to survive.

“All you need to paint is a few tools, a little instruction and a vision in your mind.” - Bob Ross

One of the major concerns of these painters is that high quality materials and tools are really expensive. The ‘few tools’ that Bob Ross mentions comes with a price tag that a lot of artists cannot afford. These factors are a major problem for painters who aspire to see a breakthrough. Lot of people think that painting is an easy task as it does not involve muscle power. But that is so not true. Not only is it difficult to paint but it can also cause a lot of health issues. Exposure to paint for too long can take a toll on the respiratory system as well as on the skin.

Beyond all this is the continuous need to justify their choice of career to a society that still considers painting to be a hobby rather a career choice. Lakshmiprasad, an independent painter studying in Chitrakala Parishad in Bengaluru, in his interview mentioned that people are unaware about the role painters play in the fields of electronics and automobile. This lack of awareness is the cause of the judgmental stares artists have to face.

It is important that the society changes else we might unconsciously push them into becoming a school of fish with no direction.
